Chicago, IL (December 9, 2021) - Parishes and Schools across the archdiocese of Chicago will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Friday, Dec. 10, Saturday, Dec. 11 and Sunday, Dec. 12. This year marks the 490th anniversary of the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, when Hispanic Catholics and other groups celebrate the Virgin Mary’s multiple appearances to St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, an Aztec convert to Catholicism.

Between December 9 and 12, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego several times. During one apparition, she asked him to carry a request to the Archbishop of Mexico City that a church be built in her honor.  Despite the wintry weather, she filled his cloak with roses and emblazoned her image upon it. This garment is now on display in Mexico City’s Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and attracts millions of pilgrims each year.
