Archdiocesan Priest, Rev. Herbert J. Meyr, Dies

Meyr was a retired archdiocesan priest and former pastor of St. James Parish in Maywood

Chicago (Dec. 23, 2020) – Rev. Herbert J. Meyr, former pastor of St. James Parish in Maywood, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020, at the age of 85.

Meyr was born on Nov. 2, 1935, in Chicago. He attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein.

Meyr was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1960, by Cardinal Albert Meyer, and celebrated his first solemn Mass on May 8 of the same year at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Chicago.

After ordination, Meyr served as assistant pastor at the following parishes located in Chicago: St. Teresa of Avila Parish on Armitage Avenue, St. James Parish on Wabash Avenue and St. Anne Parish on Garfield Boulevard and 55th Street. Meyr was also the pastor of St. Francis de Paula Parish on Dobson Avenue from 1971 to 1988 and St. James Parish in Maywood from 1988 until he retired in 2006.

Rev. Louis J. Zake, retired archdiocesan priest, remembered his classmate as a “phenomenal priest, a great pastor always concerned for his people.” Zake added that Meyr was a person who could lift your spirits, but was also very much involved with the people of his parishes.

Rev. Erwin Friedl, former pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Melrose Park, was one of Meyr’s close friends. They went to the same retreats and over the years their friendship grew. Friedl remembered Meyr as a good and cooperative priest.
