Archdiocesan Priest, Rev. John A. Farry Dies

Farry was a retired archdiocesan priest and pastor emeritus of St. Andrew Parish on Addison Street

Chicago (Aug. 17, 2021) – Rev. John A. Farry, pastor emeritus of St. Andrew Parish on Addison Street, passed away Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021. He was 82 years old.

Farry was born on Aug. 11, 1939, in New York. He attended St. Sabina, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. Farry was ordained to the priesthood on April 29, 1965, by the Most Rev. Cletus F. O’Donnell, and celebrated his first solemn Mass on May 2 of the same year at Little Flower Parish in Chicago.

After ordination, “Fr. Jack” served as assistant pastor at Our Lady of Solace Parish on Sangamon Street, and as associate pastor at St. Bernard Parish on 65th Street (now known as St. Benedict the African Parish) and Holy Name Cathedral Parish on State Street. He served as pastor in two parishes: St. Thomas the Apostle Parish on Woodlawn Avenue and St. Andrew Parish. The title of pastor emeritus of St. Andrew Parish was bestowed on him in 2009. Farry was also member of the Presbyteral Senate, College of Consultors, and served as coordinator of the Englewood Catholic Community.

Rev. Robert G. Mair, pastor emeritus of St. Catherine Laboure in Glenview and a classmate of Farry, remembered him as a “wonderful friend, a great man and a dedicated priest.”

Visitation hours will be from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021, followed by the funeral Mass at 5 p.m. All funeral services will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, 5472 S. Kimbark Ave. in Hyde Park. Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant and Rev. William Vanecko will be the homilist. Committal and interment will be private.
