Statement from Cardinal Cupich for the parishioners of the Mision San Juan Diego

September 4, 2018

Dear Parishioners, Staff and Friends of Mision San Juan Diego,

I regret to inform you that I have removed Father Diego Berrio as pastor of Mision San Juan Diego in Arlington Heights, Illinois, effective immediately, and have withdrawn his faculties to minister in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We were informed this morning that Father Berrio was arrested by the Miami-Dade County Police Department on September 3, 2018 and was charged with lewd behavior with an adult male. We will await the results of the police investigation and will take further action at that time.

It is our responsibility to ensure those who serve our people are fit for ministry. We take this matter very seriously and will appoint an administrator for the parish as soon as possible. This is undoubtedly difficult news for you to receive.

Please know that we are committed to ensuring the parish of Mision San Juan Diego receives pastoral care and that you are in my prayers.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Cardinal Blase J. Cupich
Archbishop of Chicago
