Statement of the Archdiocese of Chicago on Queen of Apostles Church in Riverdale

After consultation with the Archdiocese of Chicago Presbyteral Council, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, issued a decree stating that Queen of Apostles Church, located at 207 W. 145th Street in Riverdale, is relegated to profane but not sordid use, effective today, September 16, 2019. This means that beginning today, September 16, 2019, the building will no longer be a sacred space and may not be used for worship. The final Mass at Queen of Apostles Church was celebrated on September 15, 2019.

Queen of Apostles Church was the parish church of the former St. Mary Queen of Apostles Parish. As announced in January 2019, as part of the archdiocese’s Renew My Church initiative, Holy Ghost Parish (South Holland), St. Jude the Apostle Parish (South Holland) and St. Mary Queen of Apostles Parish united to form one, new parish effective July 1, 2019. St. Jude the Apostle Church serves as the parish church.

The united parish of Holy Ghost, St. Jude the Apostle and St. Mary Queen of Apostles will work with the Archdiocese of Chicago to determine future use of the Queen of Apostles Church property.

Leadership of the united parish are working to ensure a smooth transition to the new parish and church structure so that the parish community can enjoy a vibrant future worshipping together at St. Jude.
