Fr. Krebs was Pastor Emeritus of St. Bede Church in Ingleside, Ill.

Chicago, IL (March 8, 2018) – Rev. John F. Krebs, 86, passed away on his birthday, February 28, 2018. He was the Pastor Emeritus of St. Bede Church in Ingleside, Ill.

Fr. Krebs was born in 1932 in Chicago. He attended St. Mary of the Lake School and Quigley Preparatory Seminary, both in Chicago.

Fr. Krebs earned a master’s degree in 1956 from the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Ill. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 3, 1957 by Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago, and celebrated his first Solemn Mass at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Chicago on May 5, 1957.

After ordination to priesthood, Fr. Krebs served the archdiocese as assistant pastor in four parishes: St. Benedict Parish on Irving Park Road in Chicago (1957-64), St. Albert the Great Parish in Burbank, Ill., (1964-68), Transfiguration Parish in Wauconda, Ill., (1968-74) and Santa Maria del Popolo Parish in Mundelein, Ill., (1974-79). He became pastor of St. Benedict Parish in Chicago in 1979 and continued to serve the parish until 1992. Fr. Krebs then served as associate pastor of Santa Maria del Popolo Parish in Mundelein, Ill., for a year and served St. Bede Parish in Ingleside, Ill., until 2002 when he was bestowed the title of pastor emeritus.

Rev. James Kinn, pastor emeritus of Santa Maria del Popolo in Mundelein, Ill., was a classmate and a dear friend of Fr. Krebs. “He was in several parishes and he served well in all.” In the last 20 years, Fr. Krebs suffered from Alzheimer’s disease but Fr. Kinn would always remember his classmate as a friendly, gentle and dedicated priest. “I’ve known him for 70 years and he was never angry with me,” added Fr. Kinn.

Visitation hours will be 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 9, followed by the Funeral Mass. All funeral services will take place at St. Benedict Church, 2215 West Irving Park Road in Chicago.

Fr. Kinn will be the main celebrant and homilist.
