Archdiocesan Priest, Rev. William G. Kenneally, Dies

Kenneally was a retired archdiocesan priest and pastor emeritus of St. Gertrude Parish on Glenwood Avenue in Chicago

Chicago (Nov. 1, 2021) – Rev. William G. Kenneally, pastor emeritus of St. Gertrude Parish on Glenwood Avenue in Chicago, passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021. He was 85 years old.

Kenneally was born on Nov. 20, 1935, in Chicago. He attended Maternity B.V.M. School and Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein.

Kenneally was ordained to the priesthood on May 1, 1961, by Cardinal Albert Meyer, and celebrated his first solemn Mass on May 7 of the same year at Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Chicago.

Kenneally served the Archdiocese of Chicago as assistant pastor at St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Park Ridge, St. Therese of the Infant Jesus Parish on Wood Street in Chicago and Immaculate Conception Parish on North Park Avenue, also in Chicago. Kenneally later served as associate pastor at St. Edmund Parish in Oak Park and St. Nicholas Parish in Evanston. In 1984, he served as pastor at St. Gertrude Parish until he was bestowed the title of pastor emeritus in 2006.

Visitation hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, 2021, followed by a prayer service at 8 p.m. led by Rev. Dominic J. Grassi. The funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2. All funeral services will be held at St. Gertrude Parish, 1420 W. Granville Avenue in Chicago.

Rev. Gerald P. Joyce, a retired classmate of Kenneally, will be the main celebrant and the homilist of the funeral Mass. Interment will be held at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
