Archdiocesan Priest, Rev. John W. Dewes, Dies

Dewes was a retired archdiocesan priest and pastor emeritus of St. Anne Parish in Barrington

Chicago (Nov. 17, 2021) – Rev. John W. Dewes, pastor emeritus of St. Anne Parish in Barrington, passed away Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021. He was 82 years old.

Dewes was born on Jan. 14, 1939, in Chicago. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas School and Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein.

Dewes was ordained to the priesthood on April 29, 1965, by Most Reverend Cletus O’Donnell, and celebrated his first solemn Mass on May 2 of the same year at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Oak Park.

Dewes served the Archdiocese of Chicago as assistant pastor at Our Lady of Hope Parish in Rosemont and St. Raymond de Penafort Parish in Mt. Prospect. Later he was associate pastor at Immaculate Conception Parish in Highland Park and St. Hubert Parish in Hoffman Estates. In 1989, he served as pastor at St. Anne Parish until he was bestowed the title of pastor emeritus in 2009.

Rev. William Vanecko, pastor emeritus of St. Kilian Parish on 87th Street in Chicago, remembered his classmate as a “popular and very effective pastor.”

Visitation hours will be from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021, followed by a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 22. The funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Nov. 22. All funeral services will be held at St. Anne Parish, 120 N. Ela Street in Barrington.

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant and Rev. Bernd Wolharn from the Diocese of Essen in Germany will be the homilist of the funeral Mass. Interment will be held privately.
