Congregation of the Passion Priest, Rev. Eric Meyer, C.P., Dies

Meyer served as associate pastor and pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Chicago

Chicago - (Jan. 20, 2023) – Rev. Eric Meyer, former pastor of Immaculate Conception Church on Talcott in Chicago, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2023. He was 84 years old.

Meyer was born on March 26, 1938, in Chicago. He attended St. Ita Grammar School in Chicago, the Passionist Fathers Seminary, located in Normandy, Mo., at the time, and earned his doctorate in theology in Münster, Germany.

He entered the Congregation of the Passion on July 9, 1959 and was ordained a Catholic priest on April 28, 1966.

Meyer taught theology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. He ministered at the Newman Center at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale from 1981 to 1987. Meyer was also an associate pastor and then the last Passionist pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Chicago from 2005 to 2013.

Rose Hegarty, former business manager at Immaculate Conception Parish, remembered Meyer as a good man, very dedicated to the Church. “He had a golden heart, and always felt sorry for people who needed help,” Hegarty said.

Visitation hours will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, and the funeral Mass will take place immediately afterward at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 7211 W. Talcott Ave. in Chicago.

Rev. David Colhour, C.P., will be the main celebrant of the funeral Mass and Rev. Bob Weiss, C.P., will be the homilist. Interment will take place at a later date at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
