'The Catholic New World' Becomes 'Chicago Catholic'

New Design, New Columnists Reposition Biweekly as Leading Destination for Catholic Conversation

Chicago, IL (January 18, 2017) – New World Publications of the Archdiocese of Chicago announced today the redesign its English-language newspaper, The Catholic New World. It will now carry the name Chicago Catholic, as the paper was called in 1980s, and feature an expanded roster of regular contributors, as well as book, film, and TV reviews. The change marks the newspaper’s 125th year of publication.

“The death of Catholic print journalism has been greatly exaggerated,” said Grant Gallicho, Director of Publications of Media, who serves as Chicago Catholic’s associate publisher. “The newspaper turns 125 this year. We thought it as good a time as any to reimagine the way we bring readers news and views from around the archdiocese — and the wider church. We want the newspaper to be a place where Catholics across Chicagoland and the nation can not only learn about what’s happening in the church, but also engage the ideas and beliefs that make our tradition so rich.”

The firm Crosby Associates redesigned the newspaper, which now offers a cleaner, more contemporary look. Additionally, set for a spring launch, the Chicago Catholic website is being completely rebuilt according to Crosby’s design specifications.

Chicago Catholic, whose editor is Joyce Duriga, will feature new regular contributors, including Rev. James Keenan, SJ, ethicist at Boston College and the Director of the Jesuit Institute; Kerry Robinson, Executive Director of the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management; and Don Wycliff, former editorial board member of the Chicago Tribune and the New York Times. They will join current columnists Bishop Robert Barron of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles; Monsignor Michael Boland, head of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago; Cardinal Blase J. Cupich; Christopher Lamb, journalist covering the Vatican from Rome; Michelle Martin, Chicago Catholic staff writer; and Rev. Donald Senior, CP, New Testament scholar who pens the paper’s Scripture column.

Chicago Catholic is the official biweekly newspaper of the Archdiocese, with a circulation of 43,000, serving Catholics throughout Cook and Lake Counties.
