Archdiocesan Priest, Rev. James F. Galivan, Dies

Former Chaplain of the Catholic Alumni Club of Chicago

Chicago, IL (August 11, 2016) – Rev. James (Pat) F. Galivan passed away on Monday, August 8, 2016. He was 70 years old.

Fr. Galivan was born in Chicago on March 16, 1946. He attended Our Lady of Good Counsel School (closed in 1989) in Chicago, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and Kelly High School before earning a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago and continuing his seminary studies at the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary.  Fr. Galivan was ordained into the priesthood on May 13, 1981, by John Cardinal Cody, Archbishop of Chicago.

Fr. Galivan served in the Archdiocese in a number of different roles. After being ordained in 1981, he served as Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Charity Parish in Cicero (1981-83); Holy Trinity Parish in Chicago, which was closed in 1990 (1983-89); St. Cletus Parish in La Grange (1989-92); St. Hugh Parish in Lyons (1992-99); and St. Christopher Parish in Midlothian (1999). In addition to his parochial roles, Fr. Galivan also held the position of Chaplain to the Catholic Alumni Club of Chicago (1985). He recently retired from ministry for health reasons.

Sr. Miriam Patrick Cummings, SSND, who knew Fr. Galivan for many years said, "He was always kind, especially to the poor."

Visitation for Fr. Galivan will take place from 9 to 10 a.m., on Tuesday, August 16, at St. Mary of Perpetual Help Parish, 1039 West 32nd Street in Chicago. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Most Rev. Francis Kane, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, at 10 a.m.  Rev. Theodore L. Ostrowski, Pastor of St. Denis Parish in Chicago and a classmate of Fr. Galivan, will be the homilist.

Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip.

Fr. Galivan is survived by a sister, Carol Becker.
