Incardination

The Archdiocese of Chicago receives international priests for five years. Unless the diocesan extern or international priest makes the extraordinary decision to incardinate, the expectation is he will return home.

Candidates for incardination into the presbyterate of the Archdiocese of Chicago must successfully complete a four-year probationary period consisting of a First Phase and a Second Phase of the Probationary Period, with a two-year assignment at different parishes as an associate pastor.

As part of this process, the Incardination Committee evaluates these assignments toward the end of each phase and makes a determination. The Incardination Committee communicates a recommendation to the archbishop regarding the possibility of incardination for the priest applicant.
