City of Chicago Parishes Only
The City of Chicago has reinstated the water fee exemption for not-for-profit organizations (NFPs) as of January 1, 2013. The Real Estate Office has completed the exemption application on your behalf. All parishes in the City of Chicago will receive at least a partial water fee exemption based on their annual assets. The exemption rates are as follows:
Annual Assets | Percent Exempted |
Under $1,000,000 | 100% |
$1,000,000 – $10,000,000 | 60% |
$10,000,000 – $250,000,000 | 25% |
Over $250,000,000 | 0 |
The sewer waiver available to NFPs in Chicago has not changed. A $500 sewer waiver is automatically applied to each NFP account every six months. Sewer amounts above and beyond the waiver are the responsibility of the water customer. As of April 1, 2017, there is an additional sewer tax that must be paid.
All prior past due balances must be paid. The water department will work with any parish in establishing a reasonable payment plan for those who cannot pay the balance in full.

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago
- The MWRD encompasses the City of Chicago and most cities, suburbs, townships, and villages that are located in Cook County, with the exception of certain communities located in the far northwest corner and far southern portion of Cook County.
- MWRD does not provide water or local sewer service. The services provided by the MWRD include the treatment and disposal of sewage, industrial waste, and other wastes generated by the user after it passes through the local sewer system. As well as assessing liens on parish property.
- Each Parish within Cook County is charged an annual user fee for MWRD services. This is an annual charge that must be paid or the parish will face fines and penalties.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact the MWRD directly at 312.751.3000.
