Palm Burning Ceremonies

Several Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic schools and parishes will host palm burning ceremonies to burn the previous year’s palm leaves that will be used for ashes on Ash Wednesday. Priests will bless the ashes before they are distributed during Ash Wednesday services.

March 6 is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the 2019 Lenten season, a solemn 40-day period devoted to reflection, prayer, spiritual preparation and fasting before Easter. On Ash Wednesday, Catholics will have ashes applied to their foreheads in the shape of cross. The ashes symbolize penance, mourning and mortality. For Catholics, the ashes are an outward expression of their faith.
