Lakota Inculturated Mass for Red Cloud School
Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, will reconnect with his South Dakota roots when he presides over the inculturated Mass for Red Cloud Indian School, a Jesuit school located on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Cardinal Cupich spent time on the Pine Ridge Reservation when he was Bishop of Rapid City from 1998 to 2010. The inculturated Mass will embrace and celebrate the spiritual richness of the Lakota people. During the Mass, Lakota tribal members who work at Red Cloud Indian School will use drumming, singing, and smudging (azilya) to express a union of the integration of their culture and belief. Red Cloud Indian School is located in the poorest county in the United States. Ninety-five percent of the school’s budget is covered by private donations. Tuition is $100.
