Archdiocesan Priest, Rev. Joseph A. Pastick, Dies

Rev. Pastick was Associate Pastor of Our Lady of the Wayside Parish in Arlington Heights

Chicago, IL (October 24, 2017) – Rev. Joseph A. Pastick, 94, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017, at Southern Pines Healthcare Center, New Port Richey, Fla. Rev. Pastick’s last assignment in the Archdiocese of Chicago was as associate pastor of Our Lady of the Wayside Parish in Arlington Heights.

Rev. Pastick was born in Chicago on April 8, 1923 and was the oldest of eight children. He attended St. Andrew and Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago. Rev. Pastick went on to the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary to earn Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. He was ordained into the priesthood on May 7, 1949 by Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago, and celebrated his first Solemn Mass at St. Andrew Parish in Chicago on May 8, 1949.

Rev. Pastick served the Archdiocese in a number of different parochial roles. He started as assistant pastor at St. Felicitas Parish on 84th Street (1949-56), and continued to serve as assistant pastor at Annunciation Parish on Wabansia Avenue (1956-61), St. Mary Parish in Buffalo Grove (1961-64), St. George Parish in Tinley Park (1964-69) and St. Richard Parish on 50th Street (1969-75). Subsequently, Rev. Pastick served as associate pastor at Our Lady of Humility Parish in Beach Park/Zion (1975-80) where he became involved in a multitude of parish activities. Later, Rev. Pastick served as associate pastor at St. Emily Parish in Mt. Prospect (1980-87) and at Our Lady of the Wayside Parish in Arlington Heights (1987-93). In 1993, he retired from active ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago and relocated to Florida where he assisted with priestly ministry at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in New Port Richey, Fla. He celebrated his 60th anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood in 2009 and retired as sacramental minister in 2011 when he moved to Springhill, Fla.

Rev. Vince Costello met Rev. Pastick in 1993 at Our Lady of the Wayside Parish; at that point, Rev. Pastick was about to retire but continued to help at the parish in the summer. Rev. Costello remembers Rev. Pastick as a “very dedicated priest” who was good to a lot of people. “He did his best to serve God and the Church,” added Rev. Costello.

Rev. Martin Barnum has known Rev. Pastick since he was a child attending St. Felicitas Parish on 84th Street where Rev. Pastick was associate pastor. Their paths crossed again when Rev. Barnum became pastor of Our Lady of the Wayside Parish in Arlington Heights. “I worked with him for four years and found him to be very generous and compassionate – always willing to do anything for his parish,” said Rev. Barnum.

“I remember Father Joe fondly,” said Fr. Thomas A. Baima, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake.  “He succeeded me at Our Lady of the Wayside Parish in Arlington Heights. Because of that, I would see him frequently over the years, at parish events and priest gatherings. When priests serve the same people at a parish, even if years separate them, there is a fraternal bond.”

Visitation hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Wayside Parish, 434 W. Park Street in Arlington Heights, on Thursday, October 26, 2017 followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m.

Rev. Edward Fialkowski will be the main celebrant of the Funeral Mass and Bishop Raymond Goedert will preside in choir dress. Interment will take place at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.

A brother, Jerry (Rose) Pastick, survives.
