Archdiocese of Chicago Will Join with the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago to Mark the Breaking of the Ramadan Fast at the 24th Annual Muslim-Catholic Iftar on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at the Islamic Foundation North in Libertyville

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, and Dr. Abdulgany Hamadeh, chairman of CIOGC, will offer remarks. Bishop Mark Bartosic and Imam Azfar Uddin will be the keynote speakers.
Chicago (March 11, 2024) – The Archdiocese of Chicago will join with the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) to mark a day’s fast at the 24th Annual Muslim-Catholic Iftar dinner and program on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, from 5 – 8:15 p.m. at the Islamic Foundation North (IFN), 1751 S. O'Plaine Rd., in Libertyville. Sponsored by the CIOGC, the annual interfaith iftar commemorates breaking the Ramadan fast, observing maghrib prayer and sharing a festive dinner and program. The iftar is a private event.

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich and Rabbi Wendi Geffen to offer opening and introductory remarks, respectively. Professor Mary C. Boys, SNJM, of Union Theological Seminary in New York, to be the keynote speaker.
Chicago, (Feb. 29, 2024) – The 27th Annual Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Jerusalem Lecture will take place at North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Rd., Glencoe, on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 7 – 8:15 p.m. Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, will deliver opening remarks and Rabbi Wendi Geffen, senior rabbi at NSCI, will provide the introduction of speakers and serve as emcee. Professor Mary C. Boys, SNJM, of Union Theological Seminary in New York, will be the keynote speaker. The lecture is part of a longstanding series that maintains dialogue between Jewish and Catholic communities on the theological issues affecting their relationship.

Archdiocese of Chicago Hosts 46th Annual African American Heritage Prayer Service

African American Heritage Awards will be presented to student and adult leaders in Catholic education during the Feb. 23 event at Holy Name Cathedral
Chicago, (Feb. 22, 2024) – The Archdiocese of Chicago will host its 46th annual African American Heritage Prayer Service on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St. (between State and Superior) in Chicago. Rev. Carl Gales, SVD, Administrator at Our Lady of Africa Parish, Greg Richmond, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, and archdiocesan priests and deacons will join hundreds of students from across the archdiocese for this Black History Month celebration. In addition, the Archdiocese will welcome Yvette Mensah as a special guest speaker. Mensah is a graduate of Loyola Academy in Wilmette and the recipient of the 2023 student leadership award.

Loss of state Invest in Kids scholarship program forces closure of two Catholic Schools

Some Catholic schools face financial cliff due to loss of tuition support for families.
Chicago, (Jan. 18, 2024) – The pastors of St. Frances of Rome School in Cicero and St. Odilo School in Berwyn today announced that both schools will close in June of this year, bringing an end to a combined total of 196 years of Catholic education at their locations.

Chicagoland Christian Churches to pray together throughout the week
Chicago, (Jan. 17, 2024) – The Archdiocese of Chicago will join other Christian churches in praying for unity during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, beginning on Thursday, Jan. 18. Started in 1908, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated annually around the world. Those eight days form an “octave” from the traditional feast day of the Confession of St. Peter to the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul.

Archdiocese of Chicago Announces its Shift to 100% Renewable Energy

Cardinal Cupich made the announcement on December 17, the 87th birthday of Pope Francis.
Chicago - (Dec. 17, 2023) – Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, today announced that the archdiocese, including its nearly 400 parishes and schools, and offices, will shift its entire electricity purchase to 100% renewable, effective in January 2024. This renewable energy purchase is the equivalent of removing 15,000 cars from the road annually, or the carbon emissions generated by 8,500 homes per year.
