Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, and Bishop Benedict Aleksiychuk, of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Chicago, will mark the three-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine with an interreligious prayer service at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago on Monday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.
Parishioners, clergy and the Ukrainian community will gather at Holy Name Cathedral for the prayer service to honor the dead, remember those suffering from the consequences of war and pray for peace.
The prayer service will feature:
- Ksenia Levkovych who will sing the U.S. National Anthem;
- The Stavros Male Choir of St. Joseph the Betrothed Ukrainian Catholic Church in Chicago who will perform the Ukraine National Anthem;
- A Ukrainian memorial prayer, Panakhida, in which the dead are prayed for and are commended to God;
- Remarks by Cardinal Cupich;
- Remarks by Bishop Benedict;
- Prayers led by representatives of various religious communities including the Armenian Orthodox Church and the Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist communities. Rev. Andreas Garabedian of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Rabbi Reni Dickman of the Jewish community, Imam Hassan Aly of the Muslim community and Rev. Ron Miyamura of the Buddhist community will be in attendance.
- A solemn Ukrainian prayer song, “Bozhe Velykyy Yedynyy” (One and Great God).
